THE FABRIC EDIT
Not All Pajamas Are Created Equal: How to Choose the Right Fabric for You
The fabric you choose can change how your pajamas feel, fit, and hold up over time. Here's what to look for before you buy your next favourite set.
There is a reason some pajamas become the first thing you reach for at the end of a long day, while others stay forgotten in the back of your wardrobe.
It isn't always the colour, the print, or even the design. Sometimes, the difference begins with something you don't immediately notice: the fabric.
But with so many materials to choose from, how do you know which one is right for you?
The answer starts with understanding how different fabrics feel, behave, and fit into your everyday life.
Cotton: The Everyday Classic
Cotton is a popular choice for sleepwear because it feels familiar, is generally breathable, and comes in a wide range of weights and weaves.
If you tend to feel warm at night, a lightweight cotton fabric may be worth considering. If you prefer a little more structure in your pajamas, a denser cotton weave might suit you better.
However, not all cotton feels the same. The quality of the yarn, the weave, the fabric's weight, and the finishing process all influence its final feel.
Best for: Everyday wear, those who prefer a natural fibre, and anyone looking for a versatile sleepwear option.
Viscose: Softness with a Flowing Feel
Viscose is a regenerated cellulose fibre often made from wood pulp or other plant-based raw materials.
One of its most recognisable qualities is its fluid drape. Depending on its construction, viscose fabric can feel smooth against the skin and fall beautifully around the body.
It can be an excellent choice if you enjoy pajamas that feel light and move naturally with you.
The trade-off? Some viscose fabrics need more delicate handling, especially when wet. Always check the garment's care label before washing.
Best for: Those who love a softer hand feel and a more fluid silhouette.
What About Stretch?
You may also come across fabrics blended with elastane, sometimes called Lycra.
A small amount of stretch fibre can help a garment move with your body and improve its flexibility. But stretch alone doesn't determine comfort or quality.
The overall fabric construction, fit, and amount of stretch all matter.
Four Things to Check Before Buying
1. Read the composition. Look beyond the product name and check the actual fibre percentages. A fabric described as cotton-blend, for example, may contain several different fibres.
2. Think about your climate. Consider the temperature of your bedroom and whether you tend to feel warm or cold at night. Fabric weight and weave matter alongside fibre type.
3. Pay attention to the fit. A beautiful fabric won't feel comfortable if the waistband digs in, the shoulders pull, or the trousers restrict movement.
4. Check the care instructions. Consider whether you're happy to wash a delicate garment separately or whether you need something that fits easily into your regular laundry routine.
So, Which Fabric Is Best?
There isn't one universal winner.
Cotton may suit you if you prefer its familiar feel and versatility. Viscose may appeal to you if you love a smoother texture and fluid drape. A blended fabric may offer a balance of different qualities, depending on its composition.
The important thing is to understand what you're buying rather than relying on appearance alone.
Because the best pajamas aren't simply the ones that look beautiful when you first see them.
They're the ones that feel right for you, your routine, and the little moments that make up your day.
The June Joy Note: Choose with intention. Comfort is personal, and the right fabric is the one that works for you.
